As a creative space by locals for locals, Open Door Store is quite literally homegrown – given that Zhong Ming first started designing and screen printing out of his room at home. Opened in June earlier this year, the retail space stocks a wide variety of local artists, including Zeherng, New World Plaza, Shrub, John WIP and the list goes on (and on). Trust us when we say there was something interesting to see in every corner of the store. Plus if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see Zhong Ming screen printing on the first floor for Konstrukt Labs.
During our talk with the creative minds that run the store, we learned a few fun things about the Why and How. Zhong Ming emphasised how important local supporting local was to them, sharing with us his many experiences from his time in the scene. He was really passionate about creating a space that would encourage mutual support between artists, and really grow the community. Debbie also told us that they don’t really follow any strict timelines for bringing works into their retail space, giving more room for flexibility and freedom for both themselves and the artists they’re liaising with. They share and have built a relationship with the artists they’ve stocked over the years, pointing yet again to the idea of community.
Personally, I felt the store’s philosophy really shone through when Zhong Ming mentioned that they were willing to work with anyone who felt confident to showcase their work. And yes, we’re looking at you! (Just kidding, no pressure). Overall, it was just heartening to hear of their active efforts in creating opportunities for more community and collaboration.
It was so good to finally pay Open Door Store a visit and you should soon too! Zhong Ming mentioned that they might change up the design of the store soon, so if you haven’t dropped by and checked out the mama-store-esque layout they have going right now, you seriously should. You can also find Open Door Store at Christmas Arcade – a festive pop-up happening from 8 to 10 December – they have really fun plans to set up a carnival fair-type booth so be sure to drop by, and visit all the other artist booths too! We guarantee you’ll find something you like 🙂
