In the scope of wanting to create a community for young creatives, we were exploring ways and means to lower the cost of production for students. If there was a way for us to produce a larger quantity, but with lower cost, it would give way for more creativity!
With aim and focus in mind, and with a little help from Google to research, RISO was a highly favoured printing method internationally. Out of Singapore, there were a lot of RISO printers in small outfits, and they were all trying to print as much as possible, showcasing creative work at different levels.
The journey began in December 2023, and we started to explore the possibilities. In August this year, we bought a pair of RISO single drum duplicators, with the support of our friends and community. It wasn’t easy, but we hope to contribute meaningfully to the creative community again.
A big caveat we picked up along the way: RISO is a lot more experimental than we thought. Observing different variations of RISO work internationally, it might be seen as an intentional misprint. But after using the RISO printers for the past few months, it is truly an experimental process of printing. The prints might not be consistent even if it was during the same run.
But as Bob Ross says, happy little accidents. Some of our happy little accidents were picked up by some of you at the Singapore Art Book Fair, where we sold our test prints. Even within the team, how we gauge our “good standard” varies greatly.
THUS, instead of having a printing service, we want to encourage you to join our RISO workshops. At these RISO workshops you will learn how to prepare your own file for print. You will also learn how to handle the printer, and how to print your file. We will also teach you how to achieve some congruence of what you see on screen and what you see printed, but if that’s not your vibe, it is okay.
Our hope is to encourage creativity, and sometimes learning how to roll with the mistakes grows us the most creatively.
We are open for RISO workshops for these few months of November and December, and it’s our first test run. As always, we are students focused, so it is open only for students. If you are a working professional, or in between jobs, do contact us on our contact page, and we will work something out with you. But our priority is to work with creative students.
